William McQueen of Keokuk, Iowa., enlisted in the U.S. Colored Infantry as First Lieutenant on October 11, 1863, at the age of 26. The photograph is part of a group of images collected by Col. John G. Hudson, First Iowa Infantry, African Descent, of federal soldiers and officers stationed at Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, 1863-1864.
